If there is one thing San Francisco isnt lacking - its their does of Scream Queen. Reyna Young (Miss Misery) is currently working in Independent Horror as a Director, Producer, Writer, Model, Actress, and Horror Host in the bay area.
DamnedSociety: So we finally meet the mastermind behind Last Doorway Productions. Can you tell us something about your company and how it got started? Miss Misery: Yes! Last Doorway Productions was started in 2006 by my husband John Gillette and I. We started the company to help get our movies out there. The company was a starting point to help show my talents and my films. Now it’s expanded into doing short films. Features, Conventions, events and a horror themed show called The last doorway Show, a show dedicated to horror genre artists which I host under the name Miss Misery! Last Doorway Productions has come a long way and is ready for more. I have a new show coming on, on Napa Public access called Terror Enterprises which I host as Miss Misery with Professor Olden vek. We not only show horror but also Sci Fi films. Last Doorway is gearing up for another Zombie prom, and a Women in Horror Con!! We also do a short horror film festival in San Francisco every year called A Nightmare to Remember in which we have raffles, guests, prizes at the door while waiting to get in and coffin awards that are given out to the film maker winners. I feel like I never sleep… LOL DamnedSociety: Were you always into in the horror genera? Or did it gradually catch your interest? Miss Misery: When I was really young I snuck into my fathers vhs collection early one morning and pulled out the first film I saw.. John Carpenters Halloween and from that moment on I became obsessed with horror. From there it turned into Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, and Edgar Allen Poe. I became a Goth and a loner too actually. I was never big on hanging around a lot of people or trusting people also. I was the weird kid in school that nobody really wanted to be associated with. I was teased a lot for wearing black lipstick and played my guitar in the hallway at lunch time. Horror has always been something I could relate too and I just love being scared and love scaring people. A lot of people associate “independent horror” with “bad, crappy movies”. What is your take on that? Well there’s always going to be critics, you can’t please everyone. I think people are just so use to the Hollywood and glamour of films that when they watch an independent film it doesn’t keep them satisfied. They don’t get that glamour lifestyle from it because it’s an independent. But you know people now a days are so hard to please anyway even the Hollywood movies aren’t enough for them!! DamnedSociety: You have a pretty long list of credits. Everything from producing, hosting, and acting. Out of the millions of roles you have, what has to be your favorite? Miss Misery: Oh my goodness they are all close to my heart it’s always hard to choose. I think my heart is in Directing and my favorite is being Miss Misery. Miss Misery is still a character I am developing and loving every minute. She’s become a popular host around the bay area; she hosts everything and anything she can!! I just love being able to dress up and be someone else for a change. I do have fun with everything I do and I want to do more, I feel like I don’t do enough yet everyone else says I need more sleep… DamnedSociety: So a little birdy told me that you came out with a kick ass documentary. Can you tell our readers a little bit about that? Miss Misery: Welcome to my Darkside! Women in Horror Documentary. I put this together to honor all the up and coming females in the industry, it’s our in take on how we feel what we’ve been through, our intake on the genre being male dominated and what advice we have for any up and coming females in the horror genre or who want to get involved with horror. I focus it on a lot of Independent women because we aren’t that known out there in the world. A lot of people have asked me “who are these women?” Watch the film and find out basically, lol, I mean of course you don’t know who we are and I want to spread the word about these women and how hard working they are and talented and how much they give to the genre. I couldn’t fit all the girls in, so maybe I will make another one some day. I can’t wait for everyone to watch it. DamnedSociety: Who or what influences your work? Miss Misery: I was brought up being influenced by male directors or writers and hardly had any female hero’s. As I was getting more involved in the genre I found myself being inspired by more and more women and I think that’s awesome. It gave me a new perspective on the way women think and work compared to men. I am influenced everyday by people and inspired to do more and thrive more for what I want. There’s one female right now in horror who is a major influence on me and she is so amazing and beautiful and I love her to death. Brooke Lewis is someone I look at that inspires me. She very hard working, she’s come a long way and still going and never stops working. She’s a beautiful, respectful, awesome female that I am proud to know. She’s a huge influence on my work…. I am influenced by everyday events that go on and have me thinking about how something would make a great horror flick or story to write. I come up with things everyday, so much it is hard to keep track.
